    Lifting Together

Landing any fish I’ve ever caught never required the help of a group—except to spread guffaws, snickers, and offers to snap a photo to prove to the World Sardine Society that I wasn’t endangering their fishery.

Perhaps that’s why I and lots of anglers and non-anglers alike love the fishing story from Luke 5. The climax develops like this:

When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets began to tear. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled boats so full they began to sink—Luke 5:6–7.

Now that’s some heavy lifting—a heavenly hoisting to be sure. While this far exceeds any fish story, such was the success of these fisherman that they needed to follow a lifting procedure tested to be successful over time. They lifted the heavy harvest together.

Of course, this was no mere exercise of physics. It was Jesus’ way to reveal the bountiful harvest of faith-hungry souls. This story is good for you too, you who labor in Lutheran schools—hundreds of them—to catch new believers. This is no job for loners, though success doesn’t depend upon numbers. It’s all the Holy Spirit’s guiding, empowering us to catch new believers in unbelievable numbers.

So what are you waiting for? Any day is a great day for fishing. Flex your ministry muscle! On my count, together now… 1—2—3—lift!

    Sing together: It’s uplifting!
